Eight unique birds are hidden amongst the foliage, arranged so as to keep your eye moving through the tapestry. These are birds that exist only in the imagination of the artist, who made the blueprint for this tapestry over a half century ago. Note their alert and inquisitive expressions. Embroidered on black velvet. 

Captivating from a distance, but even more intriguing and mesmerizing close up, where you become lost in amazement at all the details. 

The birds are realistically rendered in 3D by a labor intensive technique of embroidering over layers and layers of underlying floss. Very few embroiderers are accomplished in this specialized technique. Adding to the realism is the use of silk, which is particularly suited to capture the soft sheen of bird feathers.  You find yourself instinctively reaching out and and wanting to touch their soft feathers.  

Note the direction of the light, from one side of the tapestry, playing off the realistic leaves and the extraordinary, vibrant, bright red/orange color of the flowers, a perfect complement to the cooler blues and greens of the birds.  The color of the flowers is one of the outstanding characteristics of this piece, as is the tiny French knots in the center of each flower.
